As Latoyya Davis stepped to the stage, an abrupt hush fellover the crowd. A strong feeling of anticipation filled the room. In front of hundreds of captivated onlookers, she gave her first public performance at the tender age of ten. It is now 14 years later, and Toyy still captivates crowds as she rips up the undergound hip hop scene in St. Louis. With diction that delves deep within the caverns of the mind, she searches for answers to questions that few of us have the heart to ask. Toyy is by no means a lightweight. Strapped with her lyrical content and verbal abilities, she is not afraid to nock you out. Following a verse with a mind-numbing hook, her tracks bring the weight of her vivid depictions of life growing up in the struggle of poverty. Latoyya 'Toyy' Davis was born on January 24th,1979, and raised in the inner city of St. Louis. Toyy grew up in a household of six kids on a very limited income, but her parents were able to give her one of the finer things, music. By the time she was six years old, Toyy was writing her own songs; by high school, she was in every music club, group or organization she could fit into her schedule. It was not until Toyy was around age 18 that she considered being an emcee. With much coaxing from her brothers Katt and Jia Davis, better known as Bits N Pieces, Toyy began writing rhymes. Her thoughts nearly exploded on paper, and a whole collage of emotions were released. Shortly after she started writing, she was on stage performing with her brothers.
Although Toyy had discovered a love for being an emcee, it was not until her brother, Cornelius 'Katt'Davis (RIP), was tragically taken away that she decided to turn that love into an unrelenting passion to become one of St. Louis' premier lyricists. oyy has definitely earned her stripes as she has traveled up the ranks of the St. Louis underground scene, setting herself apart from other local emcees trying to make it in the game. Gaining credit as one of the top lyricists in the city, she won an emcee battle battle put on by local radio station 100.3 The Beat. Impressed by her performance, The Beat asked her to perform at the St. Louis Women's Showcase. Still performing with her brother Jia and his crew the Committee, she has also performed with Nelly and the St. unatics, Bahamadia, Art Thugs, Soul Tyde and Perfect Strangers, to name a few. She has also been recording with producers such as J Marty, who she calls her 'White Timberland,' and DJ Crucial, who gave Toyy her first opportunity in the studio and has been a major part of her development as an artist.
Toyy is nearing the top of the game in the Lou and is ready to bring her sound to a bigger audience with her debut album. Whether it's rapping, singing or performing poetry, when she hits the stage she draws her audience in with the realness of her lyrics. She exposes the reality of growing up in poverty and the struggles of relationships, and she brings insight to those blind to it. With so many different levels to connect to her, you'll be touched by Latoyya 'Toyy' Davis at first listen. Stay tuned to F5 for more info on Toyy and exclusive tracks. |
