DJ Crucial

President of F5, Crucial is an unassuming and friendly producer and father.. but catch him on a Friday night at the delmar lounge or at a house party on the weekend and witness a viciously ill deejay known for inducing soul train lines and old school dance routines. His ear leans toward the Golden Era when groups like KMD, Das Efx, and Black Moon reined supreme. The same kind of positive vibe comes through in his beat catalogue, and he provides his emcees with personalized soundscapes that reflect their respective perspectives, meanwhile always creating more beats for an ever-growing clientele in St. Louis and beyond.

F5 Debut from NYC Baston Da Invizabulman. A side is Terrachrome produced by Ad Rock and B Side is C Da Unseen featuring Son Doobie and produced by DJ Crucial. Special full color jacket art by Chris Burch.

Test Presses and Dub Plates is a collection classic F5 material, packaged together into one continuous mix of timeless bangers, transcending silly industry divisions between the gangster and backpacker, thug and emo kid. Notice first the F5 artists: Serengeti, Hi-Fidel, Nato Caliph, The Committee (w/Toyy and Jia Davis), Jonathan Toth from Hoth, and Altered States, all of whom have garnered national praise from no less than UGHH, Giant Peach, Vapors, URB, and glowing reviews from the now-defunct HipHopInfinity.com. Next, notice the guest spots: MF Doom, MC Eiht, Slug, MF Grimm, JUICE, Rayna Shine, J-TREDS, and Rubberroom. Convinced yet? If not, pay attention to the man who introduces Test Presses and Dub Plates, none other than Crucial’s idol and mentor, the legendary DJ Premier. Avoiding Pro-Tools like the plague, Crucial is as adept with the Technics as he is the classic SP 1200 and MPC. To pin down his production style requires searching that sonic range between Primo and Pete Rock. In Crucial’s sample-heavy beats, horns mingle with strings and Spanish guitars, snares skitter over 808 drops, and vocal samples are scratched together for choruses and flavor. The result is a music both classic and revolutionary, the kind of hip-hop nostalgia longs for and 2006 is lucky to have.

Time to shout out friend and former Flipside scribe Wendell Davis. His Mr. North Presents...The Midwesterners, Volume 2 is essentially a Kansas City/Chicago/St. Louis underground rap greatest-hits compilation (an old-school mixtape, if you will). The featured artists many with F5 Records ties include Miles Bonny, Black Spade, Nato Caliph, Archetype and Serengeti (don't miss his 'Dennehy' remix)
